Remarkable lessons in trust and confidence

You can’t control your material wealth, but by cultivating a strong sense of confidence, you can control your attitude about whether there’s enough to go around, according to Tim Sanders in his book Today We Are Rich: Harnessing the Power of Total Confidence. The book tells the story of the author’s upbringing by his grandmother Billye, and the remarkable lessons that she taught him. From these stories the author extracts seven principles of total confidence:

  • Feed your mind good stuff – when good stuff goes into your mind, good thoughts emerge; people who maintain purposeful mind diets of positive stimuli think healthy thoughts
  • Move the conversation forward – this is not just about the conversation, it is about changing the future for the better
  • Exercise your gratitude muscle – gratitude gives you the desire to give back
  • Give to be rich – tune into daily giving opportunities and program giving into your interactions
  • Prepare yourself – get smart by reading, learn by networking, and be a mentor to someone else while someone else mentors you
  • Balance your confidence – total confidence requires a belief in yourself, other people in your life, and in something greater than yourself
  • Promise made, promise kept – finishing, especially when you face adversity or difficulty, gives you a growth experience in which self-image improves and, in turn, expands the limits of what’s possible

It seems an odd premise for a business author to base a book on his grandmother’s wisdom, but Tim Sanders is able to tell personal stories in a very entertaining manner. The book tackles “soft” subjects like attitude, integrity and gratitude, which many business leaders are reluctant to consider, but he makes a convincing case for their importance. I highly recommend the book.
